Leadership has been shown throughout the season of survivor, in each episode there is different person who showed a leadership and some were stronger than others. In episode 9 Jeremy is elected of the show and this was a smart move by the rest tribe members that remained.  Jeremy was a strong leader he had great communication skills, was a good team player and possessed good communication skills and knowledge of the game. I think that many of his team mates saw him as a threat if he remained in the show and decided to boot him out.

In survivor we see people trying to be nice to try to make it to the end, For example Natalie and Jeremy giving their reward to Jon and Jaclyn to save them in time of the votes. But we seen it before and we see it again no one is there for anyone but themselves, so at the end of the day your last day could be any day no matter what friends you make in the game or what type of leader you are, your spot in the game is not guaranteed.

Jon and Jacklyn have shown huge leadership roles for the fact that they have basically determined the outcome of the past  4 tribal councils, I don’t understand this because they are not the only couple that is left in the game for people to be listening to them or trying to win them over for their votes. Jon and Jacklyn have a big influence in the past few episodes and I think the rest of the tribe members don’t realize that there is only 2 of them, if they want to strategize they need to find a way to vote one of them off in tribal council before its too late and they take home the winning prize!

On this episode of survivor “Gettin’ To Crunch Time” the show started out with tensions higher then ever since on the last elimination contestants decided to vote out Josh leaving Reed furious and looking for a new game plan. In this episode I thought that Jeremy and Nadia showed a good example of leadership since they made the conscious decision in trading spots as the winners with John and his girl friend. I thought this was a good strategic decision for Jeremy and Nadia.

A competitor that i think has a lot of personal power would have to be John since through out this episode he has been the one that everyone has been trying to side with since he has been able to establish so much status within the group.  Another thing I been seeing a lot of is task structure within the group. I’d have to say that its more of a chaotic and disorganized form since no one really knew what what was really happening within the tribe. So when it came to elimination everyone was bumping heads and fighting with each other. Also, in this episode I thought that Nadia was the one depicting member readiness since she was the one who seemed to be the most loyal to her original alliance who was Jeremy. In my opinion I thought that Nadia was confident and very committed to Jeremy. I was very shocked to see Jeremy be the one to go home tonight and I really hope that Reed is the next to go home.

Survivor Episode 8 chapter 5

The previous episode ended in a way that i haven’t seen before. When Julie quit it really threw a wrench in most of the blue tribe members plans. The tribe is freaking out due to the fact that their previous plans to get either Jeramey or Josh off the islands. The first challenge in the episode was very physically challenging. The tribes were both mixed for this activity and the yellow team was way ahead the entire time and keep it strong till the end and finished before the competing team. There were no clear leaders in the activity but you could hear the positivity that they were supporting each other with. It proved to be a the winning motivation. Most individual and couple strategies are based on personal power rather than position power because each member or couple wants to have earned status within their tribe. Whereas positional power is dependent upon every member of the tribe doing their job. The winning team sent John to exile islands where he found an idol making him a definite leader that carries weight within the groups voting decisions. The guys in the blue tribe are getting on the nerves of the women on the team with their rude manners. Jacklyn is showing her true colors with the women and possible a women alliance in the near future. On the individual immunity challenge Jeramey won keeping himself out of the soon to vote and the two main leaders now have become Josh and Jackelyn. In this episodes tribal council Josh was voted out. Josh was a main leader and a big threat to the rest of the tribe members. John and jacklyn were the swing votes. There is a huge power struggle between two groups with the tribe and it was clear who was in each tribe expect when it came down to where John and Jacklyn stood. Power in the book is defined as ” the ability or authority to influence and motivate others.”

The episode “Gettin’ To Crunch Time” had many intense moments. Leadership was brought in when Jon had the idol and decided to lie by saying that he didn’t have it so that Jeremy can  look like a lie and he can choose to do what he wants with everyone else. In my opinion Jon could of made another strategic decision by telling everyone that he had an idol so that Jeremy wouldn’t have to look for it and so that he can have everyone’s trust and look even better. Jon thought he would have the power if his strategy of making Jeremy look like a lie worked because everyone can look at Jeremy and wrong to vote him out. I would say that Jeremy was the relationship-motivated leader because even though he didn’t really have an alliance with anyone but Natalie he wanted to build an alliance with Jon and Kelly by giving them the reward he earned.

The task motivated leader would be Bailor because she managed to win the challenge with her feet. The group is having difficulties with one another and she able to be the task motivated leader. Member readiness was played out in this episode when the members knew that Josh had left from the previous episode and they saw a great competitor leave the game. I think that the group members gained confidence and felt like they had better chances of playing the game better by having someone competitive leave. This episode was really good and I hope that the next episode gets even more intense.

 

 

 

 

Eppy 8

What a shock to see Jeremy voted off. Granted I was not his biggest fan, I definitely didn’t see his alliance betraying him. Especially with the leadership skills he greatly portrayed among them.

From the first episode, he took charge forming an alliance, knowing what the end goal was, determined to get there. He led by example by volunteering to go to exile island and making constant sacrifices for his alliance like giving up his award with Natalie to John and Jaclyn. He has always shown leadership styles so to see him get turned against was definitely a surprise.

Leadership is found in a person who guides and takes control which Jeremy easily did. This was a strong suit of his but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough of a strategy to win.

During this late stage of the game leadership becomes a big deal, leading alliances is key to making progress to the end of the game and ultimately accomplishing their goal of victory. In the latest episode two members of the winning team of the reward challenge gave up their positions on a yacht with food and drinks to two members of the losing team. They played this off as a caring gift when in actuality they used it as a strategic maneuver. By gifting their reward to two members that were not yet in their alliance they gained favor with them and solidified their support in the upcoming votes. It also gave them the ability to vote one of their own members onto exile island to try and find the hidden immunity Idol to benefit their allegiance.  Not only was this a bold play in the game it was a strong showing of leadership by the two members that sacrificed their reward for the betterment of their alliance.

Many other aspects of this game show a laissez-faire style of leadership in the groups, even with the formation of alliances the dissolution of the two groups into one single group makes the group more of a free for all. Although they all strive for one goal it is mutually exclusive, only one of them may win, and so no one is obligated to work together for objectives. Therefore when it comes to meeting needs of the group on the island decisions are often left to the individual and the group no longer seems to be concerned about reaching a consensus on what actions to take for the group. The only agreements the groups try to make at this point in the game is who they will vote to remove from the islands and even this is ultimately left up to each individual survivor.

Jeremy, the leader.

This episode, we got to see what happens when a leadership position is vacated. With the exit of Josh, Reed was the obvious emergent leader to take his place for that side of the tribe, though his leadership didn’t seem very organized throughout this episode. A game was played where one member tries to knock off the other into a pool of mud. The reward for the winning team was a trip on a yacht with sandwiches and drinks. The yellow team won the challenge. Both Jeremy and Natalie gave up their rewards to John and Jaclyn.

This demonstrated a portion of the 5M model of leadership effectiveness in how Jeremy contributed to group motivation. Since John and Jaclyn switched to his team in the last episode, he appropriately rewarded the members of his group for their contribution to the group. Natalie stated that the reason for them trading was because they showed loyalty and they wanted to reward them for that loyalty. This also showed some model leadership qualities as well. The reward was a way of praising them for their contribution. One of the ways to model leadership is to publicly praise group members not only within the group but also to others outside the group. This was very prevalent in this moment.

When reading the chapter, I also found the section about gender in leadership very interesting and relevant in this episode. Men have been the primary leaders in the most recent episodes. Even Natalie is seen as a support to Jeremy even though she displays some of the same leadership characteristics.

A Wrinkle in the Plan ~ Episode 8

With the surprising departure of Julie in Episode 7, I was shocked and unsure of what would happen in episode 8. Josh and Jeremy tried to salvage their alliances. From the begining of the episode it seemed that Jon and Jaclyn were on the fence about which alliance they were going to choose. All of the younger players (Baylor, Wes, and Alec) just seemed to get more annoying.

In this episode, I really saw the course material relate to this week’s lecture. The Group motivation was extremely apparent During the challenge for the taco bar. The groups both encouraged their members to get the challenge done. I saw the episode relate a lot to the four categories of Motivation:

  1. A sense of meaningfulness- Everyone tried their hardest to get the challenge completed so they could win.
  2. A sense of choice- Jon and Jaclyn had the most relying on them this week; the way they voted could change the outcomes of future alliances.
  3. A sense of competence- I saw this in everyone this week, except for maybe Baylor. She annoys me and I really wanted her to go home.
  4. A sense of progress- By the end of the episode, I sensed that everyone in Jeremy’s alliance felt a sense of progress when they were finally able to vote Josh out.

Tonights chaper is all about leadership. In this blog we will go over the episode as well as connect it to chapter five of Working in Groups by Isa N. Engleberg and Dianna R. Wynn.

First we start out with the reward challenge, Jacklyn is pinned against Natalie, John agianst Jeremy, Baylor against her mom, and Keith against Alan. Everyone ends up muddy and yellow goes home with a win! One turn is when Natalie and Jeremy give their rewards to Jacklyn and John to show them they are thankful for being loyal in Tribal Counsel.

I would look at that as a form of personal power, Jacklyn and John have found themselves on a yacht eating sandwiches, they have shown their individual characteristics and have been seen as loyal, they have earned status within their group. (Engleberg and Wynn, pg 105)

During the elimination challenge, the tribe members must stack blocks with their feet. Baylor ends up winning the immunity challenge and ends up winning positional power within the tribes. she was won immunity, her power comes from her new status within the tribes. (Engleberg and Wynn, pg 105)

Can I also say, John is really using his power of the idol to rock theo boat.  Jeremy believes that John has the idol, John swears he doesnt but now that Jeremy has spoken his mind John wants to get rid of Jeremy. This is truly mind blowing to me! After everything Jeremy did for John, allowing him to take his spot on the yacht, then spending the night on Exile Island, John is truly the leader here in my opinion.

As the elimination round is up, John and Jacklyn’s power shows to be validated as Jeremy goes home. As it was said by the host, “tonight was both brutal and beautiful”, I think this fit perfectly.

Wrinkle in the Leadership Plan

In the eighth episode of survivor there was a wrench in the plan with Julie going home. Originally the tribe plan was to vote Jeremy off of the island due to him seeming in control. Jeremy is seen as the leader of the pack and Josh is considered a leader also.  Jeremy seems to have come to be the leader by motivating team players and by being strong in challenges even though he has failed at some challenges he still manages to show strength Josh seems to have emerged as leader by interacting and gaining peoples trust. Jon and Jaclyn are attempting to strategize to become leaders by manipulating other tribe member’s trust and appearing to side with people but their goal is to vote Jeremy off early in the episode. The episode begins with a reward challenge the two tribes are split up and mixed to compete for a taco feast with beers and margaritas. Keith Reed Jeremy Natalie and Wes win the challenge and decide to send John exile and this separates him from his girlfriend Jacqueline which may foil there plan if John is not around to interact prior to the next vote. At the reward meal Keith throws out the fact that when Julie left he was left without a strategy but Jeremy is displayed narrating separately that he knew that they planned to vote him off. Jeremy has s power position and is playing the game sternly knowing he is in a leadership position. Back at the other tribe meeting Josh is beginning to exercise his power to feel out the tribe members he is sitting with that lost the reward challenge. I will have to see what other blogs post about the rest of the episode but as of now it is clear that there are leaders rising Josh , Jeremy as well as John and Jac. They are motivating group members to make decisions they are modeling leadership we will see if they are effective.
