This week consisted of dirt, and lots of it! As I obtained soil samples from the bed of Long Grade Creek, I proceeded to take pictures of, dry, and sieve the sediment samples (12 total). Below is an example of the sieves (bottom left). Each sieve has a particular mesh size that separates the sediment based on grain size. I then proceeded to weigh the separated soil. On the right is an example of a sieve that has held onto sediment that is a certain grain size. As you can see, the sediment’s size is uniform throughout the sample. This data will be compared to the results of my capstone partner, Lauren. The sediment she has sampled is from the slopes adjacent to Long Grade Creek.
