Hello

A Whole New World

Well, I never would have imagined that the first thing we do in Critical Care Nursing is make our own websites, but I am actually really excited about it! This is something I would NEVER do on my own, so I am glad we are required to do it for class. I’m excited to see how they all turn out by the end of the semester. Here we go!

Hello world!

Hello NRS 420!

“I am only one; but still I am one.
I cannot do everything; but still I can do something.
And because I cannot do everything,
I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”
– E.E. Hale, American writer

One of the things I really love about nursing is that every so often patients have a way of reminding me why I do it…

This week had been dragging by, bringing one technical difficulty after another along with it. By the time I slunk into work yesterday, behind my extra large cup of coffee, I just wanted to get through the shift without anything else going wrong. And then the inevitable… a patient suddenly dissolves into frustration and tears, and more than anything just needed to be heard…

Behind my calm exterior I struggled to re-prioritize while she talked… So many tasks to do, so many other patients, and what answers do I have to really solve her problems anyway?… So I took a deep breath to still my thoughts and looked deep into her eyes (my way of stripping away clinical roles to reestablish a human connection with someone). This technique tends to work pretty well to keep a situation in the present, but then she really looked back at me. It felt a little like watching an icicle melt in a ray of sunshine… calm, gentle, refreshing. I stayed with her for a total of about 15 minutes, but the moment touched both of us profoundly.

As I dive into the wild and wooly world of Care of the Complex Client, it is moments like these that remind me what it is all for. To do what I can, to make the difference that I can, day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute.

NRS 420 Likes and Dislikes

Likes: As I reflect back on how far we’ve come in the nursing program, I am amazed at the growth I have witnessed both in myself and my fellow soon-to-be-nurses! This semester is exciting for me mainly because I look forward to “putting it all together,” and integrating all the knowledge that I have gained thus far. Last semester, each of us was able to successfully create change through nursing leadership, which we will continue to emphasize with our EBP policy paper. In NRS 420 and the corresponding clinical rotation, there will be an increased focus on case management and further development of the entire nursing role.  In addition, I am excited for this course because critical care is the specialty I am most interested in pursuing, and therefore, I look forward to exploring the characteristics of critical care and learning as much as possible to effectively care for patients affected by complex health conditions.

Dislikes: Unfortunately, I am very resistant to unfamiliar technology, and am not particularly gifted in this area. Therefore, the blog and unique online requirements of the course will be challenging for me. However, with that being said, technology is a necessary part of nursing practice and I also believe that challenge is a necessary and beneficial part of life in order to stimulate growth, and so I appreciate the opportunity to develop new skills. Although I am struggling a little with the blog, I am excited for the Voice Thread digital storytelling assignment; the interactive capabilities of Voice Thread combined with the opportunity to illustrate a patient case study will be fun!

In conclusion, although I start every semester with a little apprehension as I determine how I will find balance between class workloads, personal commitments, and my work schedule, I am so thrilled to be entering the last semester of nursing school and look forward to graduation in May with such an amazing group of people!

Likes and Dislikes of NRS 420

Likes: it is kind of hard not to like the fact that I have my own blog where I can personalize a page to my liking. I love the NRS 420 web page because of how convenient and organized everything is. I don’t have to wait for the course syllabus to download, or look for it through my files because it is always one click away. I am not the most tech savvy person but thus far I have found everything pretty simple to access.

Dislikes: if there is one thing I dislike is the fact that it is going to take me a whole lot of time to get creative enough to make my page appealing to people’s eyes. I have seen some of the posts by my classmates and I can already tell they are going to have amazing colorful web pages. Therefore I think I will continue to post pictures that my sister takes because I find them really interesting and beautiful. Another dislike that I have is that this was not developed until our last semester. I believe we would all have embraced it if it was introduced in our first semester. In addition, it would have allowed us to build a digital portfolio from day one.

This is going to be an fun/interesting class as we all get to familiarize ourselves with this new online component of the course. It’s a new thing, but something that I can manage to work with. So far I’m having fun in figuring out what background I want to choose for my page. As far as to what I dislike from the class, I have no comment to that since so far I’m able to manage my way through this online component. We will see how things go throughout the semester, but overall it’s a clever idea to use technology in an educational manner.

nursing-technology

To be honest, I am really excited about incorporating technology into the curriculum especially since one day I hope to help further advance the use of technology to help educate future nurses after I gain some experience. Although, it is important to remember not to use technology as a barrier between you and your patient. I would love to one day use technology in a way that would allow nurses to be able to provide more patient centered care and not always documenting on the computer for most of the time during their shift. I do not have any dislikes or any changes that I would like made about the course so far, only time will tell. Furthermore, I like that we can be creative in this course with our assignments. I am looking forward to this course and see how cikeys can further benefit the learning and discussions made in this class.
