This week on survivor the Hanuphu tribe continued the spiral downward. After their immunity challenge then Hunahphu camp was trying to decided what do especially since they did not have any rice left and they had probably were going to have to have to give something up in the proposition they made towards Jeff the host to receive something for their rice. During this episode there was a lot of members in the tribe that were plotting against each other and some members so the group that were not on the same page as others. They expressed conflicts of the cultural-ism dimensions of collectivism, individualism and high power distance.

The commencement of the episode started off with Coyopa tribe on a high and having a magical feeling about how much they were on top while most members of Hunuphu were not happy. As a tribe you as supposed to show unity in your decision for trying to get ahead but Jeremy was not happy with the decision to possibly trade something for rice. After Jeff brought the rice in exchange for their comfort items Jeremy let his feeling be know, mainly behind the scenes. He showed anti-collectivism. Collectivism is understanding that the different perspectives and individuals personal achievement should be rewarded. Jeremy does not understand why the group is not working together despite the odds and putting their individualism to play so that they would survive on their own. I think Jeremy felt he had done so much for the group so why did his tribe not value his opinion and did not ask him for one. Jeremy also did not understand why the tribe should be so collective in their decisions on the rice, he felt there possible could have been another way and his tribe felt the consequences when it rained.

After the immunity challenge and Natalie volunteered herself to go on exile island. I personally did not understand in the beginning why she did that, because that island looks like no fun. As the episode progressed it showed that Natalie was using this to her advantage and foreshadowing to the future when the tribes would combine. She was looking towards alliances and how being an individual will help the alliance she is apart of and strengthen bonds for later.

Good Ole Dale from the beginning felt outcast-ed from his tribe and knew there was going to be the possibility that he would be voted out. He played the big man card and exaggerated in forming new alliances by saying he had a immunity idol. While Keith was just chilling in a corner with his. Dale was excersising high power distance he accepted the difference in power in his tribe and how the king pins of his tribe were gunning to get him out. And tried to change that. In the end it did not work out for him and he was voted out.

Listening was pretty key in this episode. For example, the blue team did not listen to Jeremy and gave up their shelter. Because of this, they only had food and ended up winning a meal . They gave up comfort for food and through their selfishness lost out on a smart opportunity. They should have listened better but now the whole team struggles.

Also, on exile island Baylor divulged a lot of information for the other team and her opponent came out on top. She volunteered herself because it was what was best for her and took advantage of the situation. She listened carefully and got what she wanted out of Baylor and used it to help herself.

 

Back from the Island! Last weekend’s trip was the most productive yet with all ten transects now complete. Our trip on Nov. 8th will be the last trip to SRI until we visit in January. Now that we have our basic data gathered, we can begin asking further questions and exploring answers.

I recently went out to Santa Rosa Island with some of my peers and stayed at the research station. When not helping with their various capstone projects I found some time to explore the natural beauty of the island, here are a few photos from the trip.

The biggest takeaway from this episode regarding the chapter is how much pseudo and selective listening was taking place.  Both tribes displayed very poor listening skills. Starting with the hunaphu tribe, we saw the group attempt to make a collective decision about food. The scene played out as if a few group members had already decided they were going to make a trade with Jeff.  They pretended like anyone else’s opinion mattered but in reality they were only pseudolistening.   Jeremey in particular seemed to have an entirely different than what the other members felt but no one seemed to be interested in what he was saying. You could see the tribe members just nodding as he spoke and then continue on with their pre made decision. The worst part about this action was that Jeremy ended up being correct.  However because no one listened to Jeremey the tribe may have created a disgruntled group member through their destructive listening habits. This may very well come back to haunt them very soon.

The coyopa tribe once again displayed very poor group chemistry. This tribe already had pre conceived notions about Dale and his daughter. This led to lots of selective listening and also the tribe members were listening to evaluate Dale. Everything Dale said from the moment they arrived back from the tribal voting session was under scrutiny.  John did not care about anything Dale said until Dale took out the fake immunity idol. That moment sparked discussions amongst the other tribe members in which everyone was only trying to pick out conversation topics that benefitted them. Did Dale have an idol or not was a hot topic while everything else fell by the wayside. At the end everyone showed that even though they were seemingly evaluating the idol situation, it turned out it was all false. The tribe had already made their decision about the vote and lots of pseudolistnening had taken place. Let’s see what happens next week when the tribes “merge”. Stay tuned……
