Blood is blood
Hunahpu definitely thought tribal was a learning experience.
Coyopa does not think (well Alec thinks) that Drew has not gotten voted off but he and his tribe are in for a surprise.
Everyone is surprised and Alec thinks Hunahpu thought Drew was a threat.
To start off , members are going to switch tribes. Daughter with mother, gf with bf, bf with bf, father and daughter.
Keith is the lone single in the new Coyopa tribe and he believes to be a target amongst the 3 pairs. Josh and his bf are the only pair amongst singles in Hunahpu which he still thinks will not affect his voting.
The new Hunahpu has realized there is no food and Jeremy definitely thinks hes the new target.
The new Coyopa tribe has just found their food stash which they are extremely happy. Jon definitely needs Jaclyn because he was on the verge of a breakdown which will probably make them stronger. Baylor is with her mother but is pretty jealous of Jon and Jac’s relationship.
Keith is the odd man out but is happy he has an idol for stability.
Alec has new confidence because he thinks he beat Drew since he got eliminated. Jeremy thinks Alec needs to pull away from Josh and reed because if they have to choose someone to eliminate they think it will definitely be Alec.
Dale is monitoring the rice usage while Baylor and Missy are getting frustrated. Dale thinks Missy is a self-centered bitch and should not be eating so much rice at one time (because its his tribes food and they need to preserve). He also thinks she is acting like she is Queen B now.
Hunahpu has only 2 days of food left and everyone is getting pretty lethargic. They are now desperate in which Alec thinks they should trade a reward.
Time for immunity challenge:
Hunahpu started with a huge lead while Coyopa was really behind.
Tribe of strangers has worked together better compared to a group of loved ones. Hunahpu won with an extreme lead and now has immunity.
I believe Hunahpu is the leading tribe this season, they work together even with different members and they have a great attitude towards one another.
Jeff said he would come to the Hunahpu tribes camp to have a trade for more rice.
It is scramble city with the coyopa tribe
Dale and Kelley choose Jon and Jacqlyn want to get Baylor and Missy out. The couple are trying to get to know all the members before they pick their victims. Jaclyn is worried that Baylor will switch on her again so shes still unsure. Jon and Jac have told both the mother/daughter and father/daughter that they are on their sides.
ultimately the whole tribe thinks that it sucks either way to vote out someones loved one.
decision was made and unexpectedly to me Kelley was voted out. I was so surprised because i thought it would be Baylor but that wasn’t the case.

Does this look familiar to you? Unfortunately the “lecture” is still common place in many classrooms. Yet….
Lectures are great for getting students to repeat information but they are one of the worst teaching strategies for promoting in-depth understanding….It would be difficult to find a model worse than the one used for teaching in most institutions. (Halpern & Hakel, 2003).
Student affairs folks are often trained on learning styles and theory yet when it comes to facilitating staff training, many of us retreat to “the lecture.” We need to get HIP with our training!

Is connected about “plugging in”? What does it mean to you?
I’ve been struggling for some time now (well, since the summer anyway) to make sense of what being “connected” really means when it comes to educators and courses. I’ve seen a few general ideas of what connected means to others and I’ve seen some of it in action through my participation in connected courses and observations of others’ courses.
It seems like sometimes being connected sometimes looks like this…
I’m new at this game, so please, correct me if I’m wrong (and I may be oversimplifying things) but being connected seems to mostly mean being “plugged in.” On the individual level, this seems to mean that you’re digitally “plugged in” to various social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn). It’s a sort of individual thing… how well are you digitally connected? Do you blog, tweet, or post? Is your profile updated on LinkedIn? Do you connect with digitally with other educators, media sources, or resources? I’m probably missing something, but you get the idea.
I think this is what connected SHOULD look like.
Then there is idea of connecting courses or groups together in some way – either an entire course or even just one module; where students across campuses, countries and even across the educational pipeline can engage in a learning experience together. This is what drew me to the idea of getting “connected.” When I learned about the idea of connected courses over the summer, I saw connecting my students together with those enrolled in other courses as an opportunity to engage them in experiential learning while they broaden their international perspectives. I moved ahead with creating two connected modules for my courses; one with my friend Mario who teaches English in Japan and another with an educator in a high school. I realize now that I made some assumptions about about what a connected experience would look like: it would be planned and intentional where both/all instructors would discuss the desired outcomes for the experience, it would be crafted in such a way to facilitate active learning, instructor feedback/support would be carefully woven in, and would use the optimal digital tools to humanize the learning experience. I’m excited to report that one of my modules is underway (the one with the students in Japan) and it appears to be going well, based on student participation counts but MORE SO based on student’s demonstration of the learning outcomes and feedback on the reflection. Both my colleague and I have invested a significant amount of time planning and creating the module, guiding students through the experience and we will assess the experience upon completion.
I have seen other connected courses and I feel like my definition of “connected” is different. Sometimes it appears that students are just “plugging in” a blog to an aggregator for syndication, reading content, watching videos and commenting on others’ blogs. But, what is not clear to me are the elements of engagement, active learning, instructor feedback, and well….a humanized experience, all of which I believe are vital to the success of an online learning experience. So, I am still left wondering how do we really define “connected” when we say “connected course?” I think I’ve found my own definition through my experience (described above), but I’m curious to ask you…. what does being “connected” look like to your students’ learning experience?

Listening within the Tribes
In the reward challenge Hunahpu wins again with a big reward with actual food; such as skewers with real meat or chicken and veggies to eat.
Hunahpu won the Immunity challenge because they listened to each other which ended up getting them the win. They supported each other the whole way through the immunity challenge and talked to each other. They fell behind at one point of the challenge, but they didn’t falter. They kept listening to one other and ended up coming from behind winning the game.
Coyopa on the other ended up losing once again. However; they too played the immunity challenge really well. They listened to one another which ended up putting them in the lead at one point, but they still couldn’t beat the Hunahpu tribe. They played hard and worked together beautifully by supporting and listening to one another, but still wanted to win.
In the end there was one person who wasn’t truly listening to his other teammates and that was Dale which ended up sending him home.

Quemada Initiative Trip #4
We’ll be departing this Friday, October 31 for our fourth excursion to Santa Rosa Island. The vegetation survey is in full swing- we’re expecting our first 10 transects to be completed by the end of the weekend. The results of this weekend will undoubtedly lead to more questions. Stay tuned!
