In this episode of survivor their seamed to be a lot of conflict going on within the groups and between groups, I feel like the majority of the episode focused around the conflicts with the groups. In the beginning of the episode Baylor mentioned how she felt betrayed by Josh. This is because in an earlier episode Josh had an alliance with Baylor but when it came to voting someone off the group he decided to turn his vote against Baylor for what he thought would be for the greater good of the group. Then when John told her what he did Baylor felt betrayed and hurt, not knowing if she can trust him anymore with knowing he did this. I would say telling her in the first place would give him some credit at least. Overall the problem Baylor seems to have is that because of this betrayal she is unsure of who she can trust and feels she can’t trust anyone in her group and is worried that she may become the next person off the island.
In group blue as I will call them, was facing some conflicts in the group as well. In the episode the group as a whole at least for the most part decided that they needed to reinforce the structure of the sleeping area or I would say was the shelter area. They wanted to reinforce it incase of future storms, wind, or rain coming to the island that can damage the shelter. They decided to go ahead and reinforce the roof by intertwining the leaves that worked as a roof to make it hold stronger and stay together better. As the group was weaving the leaves for the roof Drew decided to stop as he was going frustrated and said weaving is not his strong suit and decided to lay down and take a nap. This upset the other members in the group and they felt he has not contributed to the group enough if at all and he was not going to make it very far in the show as he may get kicked from the group in a future tribal meeting or he will just leave the island and quit as he can’t handle living on the island.
In the orange group tensions within were growing stronger and stronger. In the group the men had an alliance and the women had an alliance. I see this as a Destructive Conflict that is going on within the group as these alliances in the group are not benefiting the overall group and its going to further prevent the group from working together as a whole and be able to achieve group goals. I also feel that they are not thinking ahead enough to what will happen if say the men take out all the women in the group? The men will have to take out their own and go against one another. This is only a temporary solution I feel they are seeing and maybe instead of having these alliances that are crippling the group they should look at the real problem and start winning these challenges that will prevent the entire problem with having a tribal meeting and voting someone off. Since the blue team seems to be doing so well with not voting people off.
In the end of the episode, the yellow team once again ends up having a tribal meeting. The interesting thing about this tribal meeting is that the alliances within the group seemed to have shifted. The men, at least some of them decided to break the alliance and get together with the women to vote out John. John did not really expect this to happen even though it seemed like there was a couple settle hints that something may be going on at the tribal meeting when the members were talking. John even brought the medallion that would save him from being voted off but decided not to use it as he did not feel like it was needed yet.
Part I:
Last class session Julian gave a power point presentation about APA format style. This for me in particular was very useful as it clears up the difference between MLA and APA formatting style. The information can help me with writing assignments and to have a clear understanding of the two.
Class activity involved getting into groups of three to four people going around the classroom answering questions and discussing them among ourselves. The questions were based on the reading for the week. In my group there were four of us we were all Hispanic we all shared our personal information and found out we all have a lot in common. We were able to relate a lot in our family dynamics in particular our parents having a difficult time understanding our new views and values versus theirs.
Part II:
This week’s reading emphasis on people with disabilities before reading the articles I was oblivious that people with disabilities make up our campuses very diverse. Mc.Cune’s article what do Disabilities have to do with diversity. People with disabilities face many challenges for example discrimination, and oppression. Many times people with non-disabilities ignore the needs of these individuals. Many individuals see themselves as part of a minority group and feel deprived of their human and civil rights. Individuals with non-disabilities should be more involved and help and create environments that are friendly for everyone to use.
I choose this picture because we should all unite together to help make a difference regardless of people race, religion, abilities, or ethnicity.
Last weeks class consist of us going around the classroom and discussing about different questions that we had to answer within our group. I can say I had a blast talking about these questions because all my group members could relate to the questions. We not only discuss about the hardships about being Latinos and how hard we have it on a daily basis but also of how proud we are to be Latinos. I also got into a really good conversation with one of my group members of what the difference between a Latino and a Hispanic. Something so simple as that turned out to be really complex in the end.
I chose this image because it pretty much sums up about how a person will not be put down because they have a disability. The type of people that have a positive attitude when they are diagnosed with a disability makes us the healthy individuals look bad. Sometimes us healthy individuals complain about the smallest things in the world like I don’t know what to wear, I don’t know what to eat, I don’t want to go to work today, my life is hard. On the other hand we have individuals who wish they can complain about those same things and be healthy. But instead they have something that we healthy individuals don’t always have, a positive attitude. Having a positive attitude makes a huge difference in the way you live weather you have a disability or not. Looking at the bright side of life is something so valuable that not everybody holds. And those who do hold it will not have time to complain and live every minute and every second of their lives to the fullest.
I have seen personally of how people with a disability have been treated. I once came upon a situation where I was riding the public bus to school and I noticed that an individual was getting upset at the fact that the bus driver was taking a long time to get a person in a wheelchair accommodated. He had to lower the bus, unload the ramp, and lastly fastened the person on the wheelchair onto a space at the beginning of the bus. This certain individual was making rude comments to the bus driver and the person on the wheelchair because he was running late for work. The bus driver got verbal too and told off the individual making the rude remarks. And of course the person in the wheelchair looked offended. That is what individuals like him have to go through on a daily basis. Being discriminated because they have a disability. We as a society don’t take a few minutes to talk or acknowledge individuals like these because right off the bat we think they are “retarded.” From a personal experience I’ve talked to a person on a wheelchair and I was surprised of how much knowledge he shared with me. Then I wondered that it is possible for individuals like these to become the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.
I decided to take a look at the vision statement for the Boys and Girls Club as I worked with this organization a few years ago.
Provide a world-class Club Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
I think that their vision statement is sweet, short and to the point. After working for this organization for about a year, I can see how this fits into the environment to which I worked. I can see structure within this statement because it discusses multiple areas of the children’s lives that we work with. There is a focus within academics, fitness and individualism. When it comes to synergy, although there is not a direct mention of it within the statement I know from experience that the outcome of the club is larger than the individual contributions. The point of this organization is to set youth up for success by providing resources and positive environments for them. By having a statement such as this and by enforcing it I feel as though there is able to be a constant sense of cohesiveness within the group members. Although the children may be “blind” to it because of their ability to understand, their parents are often able to understand the goal of the organization. Lastly, standards of excellence. Again, these are not bluntly listed in the vision, however I do not find that a negative thing. I think that if they were to touch on all areas of standards of excellence the vision statement would be too long and lose its “umph” if you will.
I am a seeker. I seek to help others in need. I seek to educate and be educated. I seek to make a difference in children’s lives. I seek to stay within my local community to make change where I have grown up to see change needed. I seek to continue growing as a leader. I seek to stay open minded and help others have that perspective as well. I seek to instill not only academic knowledge but life knowledge to the children that enter my life. I seek to maintain my integrity through the good times and the bad. I seek for the future, both yours and mine.
Episode 3: On this week’s episode of Survivor tensions were at an all time high, it also lined up with chapter 3 pretty nicely. Everyone is starting to find their current roles as a member of their own teams. John did mess up pretty substantially in this episode by going back on is word with Jeremy and then admitting his alliance to him in from to f the entire cast.
According to Benne and Sheats Functional Group Roles he can be seen as a self-centered role. He doesn’t really display any efforts for the better for his group and instead jeopardizes the team dynamic as a result. He fits under he role of a recognition seeker, under this model. Even in past episodes he tries to display his strength or empathy towards the other members. However he never really gets anything done as a result he just wants all eyes on himself.
Another role that somebody took on was Reed. Also in Chapter 3, but under Belbin’s Team Role Theory he took on the role of the innovator. He stepped up to the plate for his team by going out of the comfort zone and show some creativity for trying to trade John’s flint for his beans.
Another role I noticed from this latest episode was Baylor. She knew that she was only a vote away from getting kicked off the island in the last episode. She became the implementer in her group, she talked down about John in a persuasive way and was pretty tactically in doing so. We’ll see if it helped in the next episode.
As for Natalie I’m not sure what role she is, but she seemed crazy for screaming her opinions about how the other team should vote John off. Maybe the way she approached that will effect her or John later.
Part 1
Julian’s discussion about the APA format was very helpful. He came into the rescue because i was curious about the right way to cite my resources and using the right format for my future papers that i have to do. Julian’s presence and discussion are helpful and i like how we learn something new from him every meeting. I also like how he is very patient with us and takes the time to explain things very well for us and giving us his own examples. He would make a great English teacher! After Julian s activity we started a new one where we got into groups and went around answering questions and how we relate to them. In my group, it was Vanessa, Ana, and me, the other Ana,. We all related to each other in answering these questions and felt that schools should take Latinos more into consideration like having more programs and allowing more Latinos to join certain clubs and feel accepted. We also related very well to Torres article about our parents having a hard time accepting our new generations and our new traditions. Mostly everyone in class agreed that we all want to make our parents happy by continuing in school and not giving up.
Part 2
This weeks article were surprising. I didn’t really feel that disable students had trouble getting through education. I always felt like they were the ones that were helped out most. I can relate to Macune, sometime i encounter myself with an disable student and i don’t know how to treat them. Instead the most obvious thing to do is to smile and be nice to them and give them a hand if they need it. The story about Susan, Matthew, and Ruth, were great examples about how students should reach out for help. Like my mom says, if you never open your mouth and ask for help no one is never going to know what you need. I feel that they did the right thing asking for help for better understanding in class. Some people or disable students are too shy or too scared to ask for help. But little do they know that they are very well protected and supported. There are many programs in school and outside of school that help disable students. I feel that they come first, because apart from dealing with their desirableness they are also going through the struggle of getting educated. The statistics in the article Doing Whats Right, it states that ore and more disable students are graduating and achieving good jobs. That’s the reason why i chose to upload this picture. This picture has ABEL all over the handicap person, and able means possible. This picture should motivate the disable to not give up, and that anything is possible if they put their mind to it and seek help.
Last week’s class began with a presentation about APA format. Julian gave us examples of how to cite the sources of an APA paper. I found very helpful because I have been wondering if there were any major changes in the new APA book. Now that I have looked over the requirements I hope I do not mess up my citations for my final paper. The activities we did last weeks were good because we keep getting engaged in discussions as a group as well as a whole. I did enjoy being able to share some of my stories with my classmates it gives us a chance to get to know each other a little better and understand how the new material has poked our brains a bit.
This week’s readings talked about disabilities. To be honest these readings were a bit intense simply because it was a lot to read. Nonetheless, it was surprising to read in the article about ableism that although many have become aware of the disabled/special needs but not much has been done to resolve the issues that many still face in a university environment. In the GOA report, it talks about how many institutions lack resources for those who have some type of disability. What struck me was that some people with disabilities sometimes tend to avoid answering the question “do you have any disabilities” because they might not be able to get the attention or resources that they are looking for. I chose this image because sometimes people tend to overlook words and do not realize how bad they sound and let alone the type of stigma that is placed in it. To speak about disabilities creates this barrier, and it might automatically make a person think about not being capable. This negative stigma can create biased beliefs against an individual and sometimes it leads to treating others as less or not taking someone into consideration because they have a different way of expression, creativity, appearance, etc. this image challenges others to view disabilities in a new light. It is about creating awareness for change on the way these unique abilities are seen. This is a call to action, hopefully we are able to see more action in the years to come.
Last week, I was very thankful that Julian did that powerpoint. I have written so many papers and honestly I think my writing has gotten worse, not because I don’t practice, but each professor I have had has always wanted something different when it came to writing my papers. So, honestly, I have always been confused now when I write my papers and the formatting. Afterwards, I enjoyed being able to discuss with each other in small groups and rotate around the classroom. I happened to be in a group where we all had similarities or the same views. It would make us to laugh especially when we spoke about our parents.
This weeks readings only slightly surprised me. Mainly because I can relate to a certain level even though my experience was not as difficult as others so I can only imagine. Sometimes people with disabilities happen to have it worse than other minority groups, now imagine being in a minority group and being disabled. Talk about bad luck. What I happen to notice in society now is that people do not have tolerance for people that are disabled, I first hand have seen people disgusted or annoyed.
I have a cousin that is disabled and is sometimes constrained to a wheel chair for multiple hours at a time. Now, this is a very different situation as to another disabled person who may be disabled mainly from their limbs. He suffers from what i’ll call a mental “setback”. He is fully capable of walking and running around, but he suffers from a speech impairment along with other things, I say this because they haven’t been able to give a true diagnosis. Now, whenever we take him places he wants to be on his own, which is great, but reality is we can’t leave him alone, he will run away and you won’t be able to catch him. He is extremely hyperactive. This is where his wheelchair comes in. When we take him places in the chair (he is 13) people stare constantly and occasionally he will throw a fit because he does not want to be confined to it, this causes people to start saying horrible things about him. People have low patience for him because they do not understand his disability and he has gotten hit at school for it.
Now in relation to being physically disabled I have two small partial experiences. I had dislocated my knee once and I was confined to not walking and in a brace that covered my whole leg for 3 months. It is so hard to get around! People wouldn’t even help me if my stuff fell on the floor or if I hurt myself in some way, I would just get blank stares. Imagine, if that wasn’t even that severe how other people suffer?
I had a small accident a couple years ago when I lost my vision for 2 straight days. Even being blind apparently bothers people. Put it this way, I got so annoyed being ignored constantly that I ended up confining myself in a room for 2 days without eating. I was on a trip and I couldn’t eat cause nobody wanted to be with me, heck what if there was a fly in a my food! ew!
