“Tribe Talk” (Ch. 6 Verbal & Nonverbal Communication)

In chapter 6, Verbal and Nonverbal Communication in Groups we are presented with the ideas that our plural pronouns “announce that the group depends on everyone rather than on a single member”(127). This was very evident in Episode 6 showing the merge, where emotions were on the rise and alliances were being put in line. Alec displays a strong tie to his tribe and their abilities, and to make sure they know it he says phrases such as “our tribe”; creating unity. Jeremy also claims his tribe with encouraging phrases such as “we can win as team”, and usually gravitate to that in a group. Where this differed was during the stressful time before tribal council, because hidden agendas are all about the “I” language we use. This is a language of taking responsibility, and they will use phrases such as “I need you”. Saying that still gives you a sense of dependency but it is for a personal reason.
The team talk dimension I noticed was that of Social Equality when using casual and informal language. This was not equal throughout the tribe, Alec contributed to the social equality between the men by saying things like “Bitch, this is survivor” and treating Baylor as a little sister he feels he can boss around. Therefore the talk dimension between the guys and girls of Coyopa were different.
Lastly, I noticed nonverbal communication when Jeremy was noticeably upset about his team forfeiting all of their comfort items for rice. He seemed to separate himself from the tribe for a while, and in interviews his facial expressions and lack of verbal complaining showcased his true emotions. This merge will make the dynamics of their team talk very interesting, I look forward to seeing how their alliances will play out.

NUMERO SIETE

Immediately we begin to see how the tribe members discuss how Julie quitting was a mistake, how she should of contained herself till the elimination. This behavior of her’s relates to the text in how she did not have an effective problem solving strategy for the reasons that she didn’t communicate with her group members her plan or even just the way she was feeling. She choose to block everyone out, not confront the way she was feeling to her tribe members and ease her way out by basically taking the easy way out. This both hurt the plan set by others to eliminate Jeremy but it could of saved someone from winning one million dollars.

Alliances have also been formed and in the challenge presented to the groups, we are able to see creative problem solving in various ways for example being smart in how to use each member according to their strength’s which in this case was the stronger members doing the heavy work and then using the quickest person to do the running, then to finish they all contribute and wok together to raise the flag which was the finish line to the challenge. All these little steps and ideas on how to use everyone are great examples of hw to solve creative tasks in groups.

Episode 7

From the start Julie kind of seemed like she could handle her own but in the end she quit which i thought would be a disadvantage to her tribe as well as inconsiderate. Also i felt like maybe it could have been too much on her and maybe the challenges have worn her down. Indeed Julie did not have the ‘effective problem solving strategy’ because she just left without warning when personally i felt like she would have stayed if she actually conversed with her team.
Over the past few episodes i have seen how the tribes form certain alliances which has been singling out some members which i would find it difficult if i was in their situation. But with their first challenge they did use some problem solving strategies which included heavier work for the stronger members and the quickest members to do the fast pace parts such as racing to the temple.

All About Numbers (Episode 7, Chapter 9)

Well, it finally happened; the remaining Survivor contestants have made it to the merge. The dueling tribes of Coyopa and Hunahpu are no more and, the newly formed mega tribe is known as #Huyopa. Loved ones have been reunited and, singles must fend for themselves. A wrong move now could mean a million dollar decision. The stakes are high and so are emotions.

Needless to say, there are many decisions to be made. At this point in the game, being on the right side of an alliance is everything. When the tribe goes to counsel, a majority vote will make the difference between who stays and who leaves. With so much at risk, this episode provides a prime viewing ground for the varying decision-making styles of the tribe members.

Baylor, for example, seems to have been put in a tough spot by the merge. Her early alliance with Josh had saved her from going home but, now that she’s reunited with Missy, Baylor is feeling obligated to follow her mother’s lead and vote against him. From her conversation with Missy, it seems to me that Baylor would fall into the “feeler” category of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. She wants to maintain harmony and, she reminds Missy of how Josh has saved her in the past. However, Baylor is a dependent decision maker and, she’s willing to go against Josh if that will please Missy.

On the other hand, Josh’s ploy to guilt-trip Baylor was the result of his rational decision making style. Josh knew that he was on the wrong side of the numbers and, his attempt to align with Baylor was the most logical solution to the problem. Unfortunately for Josh, Baylor is going to follow in Missy’s footsteps, and she is already aligned with Jeremy.

It follows that, herein lies the tension between Josh and Jeremy. Both of these tribe members have played the game well and, the realities of politics and power have served them well thus far. For the most part, it seems that the competition between these two has only been verbally communicated via private confessionals with the camera but, the nonverbal communication is clear. Each wants the other to go home and, at the Immunity Challenge, Jeremy wasn’t shy about hiding the smirk on his face when Josh fell out of the running for immunity.

With no tribal counsel this week, Josh and Jeremy  will continue to battle for numbers and, Jon and Jaclyn seem to be prime for the picking. Once again, they find themselves as the swing vote and, as such, they have been carefully asking themselves questions of value pertaining to which alliance will serve them best. That being said, their loyalties seem to be shifting and, the next person to be voted out remains a question of conjecture. Keith said it best when he commented that the next vote “is critical, we’ll know exactly where everybody stands after” the next vote. He doesn’t have to worry, though. He’s the one with immunity.

Blood Vs. Water Episode 8: Wrinkles and folds.

Episode 8 and Chapter 5. Leadership, power, control and of trust.

In episode 8 Coyopa, The Yellow faction for this episode wins immunity. Since the paring was Jeremy on one end and Josh  on the other end. When the Jersey’s team won it threw yet another curve ball at Josh because Josh wants to control the group and Jeremy is the leader. They win the templing building challenge and Jeremy’s team wins the game. John is voted out and Jacquil is stomped by everyone acting cruel to her.

In chapter 5 we see the situational model by Hersey Blanchard and effectiveness of leadership by Fiedler both speaking on how leaders to members and of how the models work by structure speak yet another sub section called the 5 M. model, motivate, manage, make  and mentor to his or her members.  Out of all this category the most apparent one is model and management.  Two groups one lead by Jeremy who organizes his groups by his trust, the other by Josh who is organizing by mind and assets.

Returning to the episode it is game 2 and its now time to some brain and memorization work. And the most amusing part is the last two standing were Josh and Jeremy. And again Jeremy win. SImply.

Now that threw the structure away from Josh’s plan. He goes to try protect his alliance. The alliance is shaking and now everyone just just Josh’s group but also Jeremy’s group is going a bit awry.

For the chapter I believe the biggest thing is not just the structure or the 5Ms but the diversity . Culture, ethnicity, and other ideals mix this game and competition. And thus it started to work. They started to sway lose it take against it on Baylor. But in the end the focus were on Josh. The first plan was josh and even at a narrow escape of Baylor, Josh is voted out.

Which rebounds back to Jeremy who retakes his command over the group. And now the leadership is now , supposedly, going to be questioned not by individuals but by all the group against Jeremy. Why? Because if Jeremy keeps wining and protected. Jeremy will win the prize and the rest just followed and mentally everyone wants to win the prize so something will go down between the group and Jeremy once more where Jeremy’s leadership will be throttled again.
